It’s unfortunate that Java tops the list — it is one of the most horrible languages ever created (despite being popular). The author conflates mainstream with influential — they’re not the same.

PHP? You must be kidding… The language that lacks any sort of design is influential?

How come this is missing ML? A lot of the ideas in mainstream programming languages come directly from ML. Along with LISP, ML is the father of functional programming.

How come this is missing SmallTalk, the father of OOP? Isn’t it influential enough? What about Erlang? The entire internet runs on top of Erlang, isn’t it influential?
